STARS
Light Sculpture / Architectural Art Installation Rotterdam (NL) 2009-2012
STARS is a light sculpture by studio VOLLAERSZWART, sparkling in the nocturnal Rotterdam skyline. By day, STARS is barely visible, yet by night, STARS creates an artificial starry sky. The Delftse Poort, a 150m high building housing the Nationale Nederlanden offices, was randomly covered with thousands of blinking LED-lights. The lights random appearance gives them a natural appearance in the night sky. This monumental light sculpture functions without need for electricity. The durable LED-lights are charged during daylight via on-board solar cells, and remain lit for eight hours at night blinking at 4 different speeds.
